The board game Monopoly has been around since the 1930’s. The game’s game pieces—a wheelbarrow, a shoe, a thimble, a top hat, a race car and a Scottie dog have been around for generations.
So has the iron token—a staple of the game since the beginning. But sadly, the iron is about to see its end.
Hasbro staged a "Save Your Token" campaign, and after garnering only 8% of the votes, the iron’s fate was sealed, and will be retired. It will join the other eliminated pieces like the lantern, the purse and the rocking horse which were eliminated in the 1950s. Rather than saying these tokens were “killed off,” the toy company Hasbro—which owns the franchise, says the removed tokens are sent to Monopoly “jail.” Presumable they do not get to pass GO, or collect $200 on their way to prison.
On the opposite end of the voting was the Scottie dog, which was the clear choice for Monopoly fans from 185 countries, and garnered 29% of the vote.
So what will replace the iron? It seems that a cat has won its place on the board through a separate vote on the Monopoly Facebook Page.
Yes, the fans have spoken—about their favorite token.
"We know that cat lovers around the world will be happy to welcome the new cat token into the Monopoly game," said Eric Nyman, senior vice president and global brand leader for Hasbro Gaming, in a statement. "While we're a bit sad to see the iron go, the cat token is a fantastic choice by the fans and we have no doubt it will become just as iconic as the original tokens."
So it seems the iron token’s days are numbered. But if you are still a fan of the iron, buy now before the changeover occurs and the iron is cast off to Monopoly jail.
