Sears and Kmart launch Netflix competitor

Sears is launching an online movie download service. The new service enables Sears and Kmart customers to download entertainment online, including new movies on the same day they are released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

The service, called Alphaline Entertainment, is a partnership with Sonic Solutions and will be among several competitors to brand-leader Netflix, including Walmart who recently purchased Vudu, a non-subscription service for buying and renting movies that stream online.

Sonic is reportedly working with Sears on a multi-phase rollout that includes making the service available from a broad range of connected devices and ensuring compatibility with studio-supported digital programs.
