Some say the Cadillac Escalade was the first luxury SUV. Others say it was the original Land Rovers, or International Harvesters. But I say the Jeep Wagoneer was the first to step into the category in 1963 long before they were even called SUV’s. The Wagoneer was part station wagon, but with a far more upright and boxy design, and it had four-wheel drive. So what made it a “luxury” auto? An automatic transmission, a car-like interior, and its famous faux-wood side panels. The Jeep Wagoneer was manufactured for 28 years (until 1991).
Today, a company called Wagonmaster restores and sells vintage Wagoneers with prices ranging from $30,000 to $45,000+ They give the old beauties a full mechanical, electrical inspection and upgrade, and cosmetic makeover.
Because you see legends never go out of style.
