Design Poetry in Motion - The Eero Saarinen Tulip Chair

Designers come and they go but every now and then, one will come along who is somewhat of a game changer and, whilst most will look in the direction of Charles Eames when it comes to furniture design game changers, there is another who is certainly worthy of a cursory glance at the very least and he goes by the name of Eero Saarinen.

The Finnish-American designer was responsible for a great many pieces of bold and eye-catching pieces of designer furniture but, if you're looking for the piece for which he made his name, the Tulip Chair is undeniably his most iconic and timeless. The Tulip Chair from Eero Saarinen is definitely one of the pieces of designer furniture which defined a generation of furniture design in the 20th century and it was so unlike anything on the market at the time that it really helped drive forward the modernist movement in furniture manufacture.

Originally released in 1956, it really is hard to believe that this iconic piece is over half a century old when you take in its fluid, modern and incredibly unusual design and such was the skill of Saarinen as a designer, it looks completely in keeping with today's contemporary homes - thus securing his place in the annuls of history as one of the greatest designers of the 20th century.

Saarinen designed his stunning Tulip Chair after he came to the conclusion that "The underside of typical chairs and tables makes for a confusing, unrestful world" and decided to do something about it through his creation of the flowing and aesthetically excellent Tulip Chair. The breath taking piece set a new benchmark that modernist designers endeavoured to replicate but, truth be told, few then or since have come close to competing with the excellence of the piece.
