Design Porn: James Perse Limited Edition Ping Pong Table.

When I think of a ping-pong table, the first image that comes to mind is a rickety, folding behemoth made of warping pressed wood and painted green. It is typically propped up in the back of an over-stuffed garage behind boxes of Christmas ornaments.

But the James Perse limited edition ping-pong table conjures up another type image. It is more furniture than portable sports table. It’s a finely crafted contemporary piece of heavy furniture, handcrafted from environmentally farmed solid teak, and topped in a matte black. Think of it as more Bauhaus art, than plastic outdoor furniture.

If you don’t know James Perse, you should. He started making baseball caps for his father’s stylish L.A. clothing boutique Maxfield’s, and now has his own boutique, online store and deals with the likes of Barneys New York, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue. His “Limited Edition” products on the website are clearly designed with Perse’s passion for modern architecture, beach sports in mind.

As for his ping-pong table, it comes with four custom handmade paddles, and Perse branded ping-pong balls, which find place in a specially fitted drawer. It can also easily convert to a fine dining table, rather than be cast out into the dust garage whenever guests come over.
