FILTERED VIEWS: Observing What's on Instagram

What's with all of these spyglasses on Instagram? You see them on observation decks, scenic overlooks, ships, parks, nature preserves, refuges and other attractions around the world. Sometimes these coin operated viewers are referred to by such names as spyglass viewers, coin-operated viewing telescopes, scenic viewers, telescopes or tower binoculars. Sometimes they’re called optical rangers, optical sights or observation telescopes.

Whatever you call them, they can often be observed on Instagram, sitting stoically and staring out at the view. It is one of the many Filtered Views-- the fetishes, trends and habits we’ve seen on the social image site. Take a look at a few of these spyglasses we spied on Instagram:
