I blame Cadillac. Yep. They started the whole luxury SUV thing when they re-badged a GMC hauler and called it a Cadillac Escalade. As the story goes, no one thought it would be a success, then boom. If you had told me 10 years ago that Porsche, Maserati and even Bentley had an SUV in their lineup, I'd laugh you out of the room.
Oh ya, I said Bentley has an SUV--or at least they soon will.
Bentley chairman and CEO Wolfgang Durheimer recently permiered the Bentley EXP 9 F Concept at the annual Volkswagen Group Night extravaganza before the start of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.
The car is truly an uber-SUV, with a turbodiesel V-12, good for about 600 hp and managed with an eight-speed automatic. But is that really why people will buy a Bentley SUV? No, of course not. The new uber-mobile is status and glitz on 20 inch (at least) wheels. And rumor has it that the SUV might be offered with Bentley's first-ever vehicle plug-in hybrid powertrain--green clout--even better.
