Beer is made from four basic ingredients: barley (sometimes other grains), hops, water, and yeast. You harvest the grain, dry it, crack it, steep it in water sort of like tea, and then use that sticky sweet water, called wort, as the base to what will eventually become beer.
The problem is about 90% of these brewed ingredients in the US go to waste.
Enter, Damn Handsome Grooming Co. Where others saw waste, Founder Creative Director Jarrett Blackmon and his wife saw an opportunity. Damn Handsome Grooming Co. is a men’s grooming company that re-purposes the waste from the beer brewing process to create a working man’s soap.
“My wife and I started Damn Handsome Grooming Co about a year ago as a result of simply not being able to find honest, natural Men’s grooming products at our local markets. At the time we also seemed to have an insane amount of brewed ingredients left over from going on a craft beer brewing bender the last few months - and we were told that these “bottom of the barrel ingredients” were actually the best stuff on earth for the skin and hair.”
Apparently those waste products are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that are beneficial to the body. This process of upcycling waste is gaining momentum these days, and even might be part of your job description in the future.
Damn Handsome has been on the market for about a year now, and has more than just soap in it’s product line. You can purchase waxes, balms, and oils for the body, face, and hair. Jarrett and his wife plan on spending the next year growing the business further, but “…in a very smart way. We’re a small company with big ideas - and we have some epic new goods in the works, but the challenge is releasing them when they will have the most impact and not flooding our own brand.”
Damn Handsome’s customers seem to be the type that appreciate depth over breadth, or, a few really solid options as opposed to a variety of mediocre choices. “I think our community of handsome customers give us a try - and keep coming back - because we value what is useful, what is classic, well-made, hardworking and long-lasting. And we expect the same from our products.”
While the customers value what is hardworking and long lasting, Jarrett and the Damn Handsome team value giving back. “For every Damn Handsome purchase, we donate soap to those in need.” Damn Handsome does this through their program, “Darn Good.” They partner with non-profits such as Clean the World to ensure factory scraps, odds and ends, and leftovers are donated to the places where preventable deaths cased by hygiene related illnesses are high.
On the surface Damn Handsome Grooming Co. is a men’s grooming company. But below the surface, in fact, at the bottom of the beer barrel, Damn Handsome is a company that found a way to refine rubbish into something beneficial. Through turning leftover beer waste into grooming products, and also by donating their factory trash to a good cause.
