Johan Ringdal was a student attending Parsons School of Design in New York when he came up with the idea of recreating the overshoe. Among the slushy streets, freezing winds and pouring rain of winter, he needed something to protect his shoes from the elements.
Coming from an entrepreneurial family in Norway, Johan was been inspired by both his father and grandfather to start his own business.
“I was wearing my grandfather's old galoshes and wanted to make this very practical item modern again.” So after graduating, the first SWIMS product was born—the SWIMS Classic overshoe.
SWIMS are water-friendly shoes, loafers and outerwear for men and women. The company also has lots of ideas and plans to expand their footwear range to include sandals to wellies.
“What started out as a little dream as a student turned into a runaway success far greater than I ever imagined! SWIMS was only available in a couple of select stores during the first year, and we're now present in over 25 countries in over 1,000 stores. I'm happy and proud of having created a successful international business together with my co-workers.”
