Barbie has been an architect, a doctor and a cancer survivor. And now, she’s The Blond Diamond Barbie.
Nicknamed “Drag Queen Barbie,” Mattel commissioned the gender-bending design dup Phillipe and David Blond of the fashion line The Blonds, to create the latest dress-up doll. As expected, she’s shimmery, glitzy and glamorous—the perfect Barbie from The Blonds are known for their bedazzled corsets—think Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Beyonce.
"It is incorrect to label the doll 'Drag Queen Barbie.' She is the Blond Diamond Barbie," the rep for The Blonds told The Daily News. "She is female. She is the same Barbie that has been a doctor, a teacher and an astronaut, and now she is glamorized in The Blonds creations."
As The New York Times says, “What their clothes lack in sensibility, they make up for in glamour. The Blonds aren’t carried in any stores, and for the time being, they cater only to private clients. David said that he hoped this new relationship with Barbie will help their brand become more mainstream. “A whole different audience, that’s always good for anyone’s business,” he said. “And that’s the direction we would like to produce — things that are more accessible to more people. This is a step in the right direction.”
