Starbucks has announced plans for a new line of carbonated fruity drinks—antioxidant-filled, with an unroasted, green coffee extract for the energy boost.
The line of “natural” energy drinks will be called Starbucks Refreshers, and is scheduled to launch in April. You can pick up Raspberry Pomegranate, Orange Melon and Strawberry Lemonade “boosts” at grocers, convenience stores and at Starbucks. Refreshers have 40 to 55 milligrams of caffeine —less than that of an 8-ounce coffee.
"Meet our newest innovation in coffee. It’s a thirst-quenching pick-me-up that packs a boost of natural energy from green coffee extract but looks and tastes nothing like coffee. Combined with real fruit juice, B and C vitamins and ginseng, it’s a sparkling low-calorie boost of natural energy in three delicious flavors. So open a can of thirst-quenching invigoration and rethink how you energize." says the website.
“Energy Drinks” is an overheated beverage category right now. Brands like Red Bull, Monster, Four Loko and Rockstar use caffeine to pump up the energy of their drinkers.
USA Today reports that by late April, Starbucks Refreshers will be sold at 160,000 grocers. By July, made-to-order versions will be sold at Starbucks stores.
