The Problem With Chocolate Covered Grasshoppers

This week I received a FedEx package containing a promotion. I think.

On the face of it, the package did not appear unusual. I receive a lot of solicitations from marketers who would like me to blog about their products or new campaigns.

But this one was unusual. And not in a good way.

I received a bag of chocolate covered grasshoppers from Grasshoppers.com.

Now, the company obviously went to great expense to produce the promotion, and have it sent to me (and presumably others) via FedEx.

The problem with the promotion? I have no idea what they are trying to promote. I have no idea why they are called Grasshopper.com, I have no idea why I was sent chocolate covered grasshoppers, and I have no idea what "the big idea" is behind this promotion.

This is not a good thing, in the marketing world.

There was no letter within the package telling me what Grasshopper.com was.

The tag attached said "Entrepreneurs can change the world. Join the revolution" and directed me to a website and a 2 minute motivational video about entrepreneurship.

The site says that "Grasshopper empowers entrepreneurs to succeed with an Advanced Number that helps their small businesses sound more professional."

I'm still at a bit of a loss as to what Grasshopper is, what an "Advanced Number" is, why I received chocolate covered grasshoppers, and based on a packaging label that says: "approved by the FDA of Thailand" I am not sure if I should let my dog try one.
